Occasionally, a payout from Stripe to your bank account won't go through. This happens most often when bank account details are incorrect or incomplete. Here's what happens and how to resolve it quickly.
Common Reasons Payouts Fail
| Reason | Details |
|---|---|
| Incorrect bank account details | Wrong routing or account number entered during setup |
| Account closed | The bank account was closed after being added to Stripe |
| Account type mismatch | Savings account used where only checking is accepted |
| Stripe verification pending | Identity verification not completed; Stripe restricts payouts |
| Daily payout limit exceeded | Large withdrawal exceeds your Stripe account's daily limit |
| Bank-level rejection | Some banks reject ACH transfers from unfamiliar senders; call your bank |
| International account issue | Currency mismatch or unsupported routing scheme |
What Stripe Does When a Payout Fails
- Stripe notifies you - you'll receive an email from Stripe (to the email on your Stripe account) explaining the failure reason.
- Funds return to your Stripe balance - the money is NOT lost. Stripe returns the failed payout amount to your available balance in 3–5 business days.
- Aplauso shows a "Failed" status - the withdrawal appears in your Transaction History as Failed.
- Aplauso alerts the employee - a push notification and in-app alert notifies you that action is required.
For Managers: Monitoring Failed Payouts
Managers can see failed payouts across the team in Manage → Finance → Payouts. Employees with failed payouts are flagged with a red indicator. You can:
- See the failure reason
- Contact the employee directly
- View their Stripe account status
How to Fix a Failed Payout
Step 1 - Identify the Cause
Go to Settings → Payment Methods in Aplauso and look for a red alert. Click View Details to see the Stripe error message.
Alternatively, log in to your Stripe Connected account at connect.stripe.com for a detailed failure reason.
Step 2 - Update Your Bank Account
If the cause is incorrect bank details:
- Go to Settings → Payment Methods → Manage Stripe Account.
- Remove the incorrect bank account.
- Add the correct account (see Bank Account Setup).
- Wait for verification (instant via Plaid, or 1–3 days for micro-deposits).
Step 3 - Re-Trigger the Payout
Once your bank account is correct and verified:
- Go to Wallet.
- Your available balance will include the returned failed payout amount.
- Tap Withdraw and complete the withdrawal again.
If You Believe the Payout Should Have Succeeded
If your bank details are correct and payouts are still failing, there are a few possibilities:
- Your bank is blocking ACH from Stripe - Call your bank and ask them to whitelist ACH transfers from Stripe (reference company ID: 1800948598).
- Your Stripe account has a restriction - Log in to connect.stripe.com and check for open verification requests.
- International currency issue - Ensure your Stripe account's settlement currency matches your bank account's currency.
Timeline for Funds to Return After a Failed Payout
